NAMHSA - January 1-15, 2010 News

NAMHSA News for the period of January 1-15, 2010 based on the minutes compiled by Bobbi Devine, Recording Secretary.

Jan 1

-Bobbi Devine (Recording Secretary) posted the December 16-31, 2009 minutes. These were approved January 4.

-Pauline Entin (NAN Steering Committee Chair) posted the following from the NAN Steering Committee:

To: NAMHSA Board of Directors
From: NAN Steering Committee
Re: NAN 2011

The NAN Steering Committee addressed NAN 2011 as its first agenda item. The Committee thoughtfully discussed the pros and cons of accepting bids for NAN 2011, as was done for NAN 2005, 2007 and 2009. The Committee discussed many other options, including locating NAN 2011 in Lexington, KY or another location selected by the Board (without accepting bids) or not holding NAN 2011.

By a 9 to 2 vote, the Committee recommends that the NAMHSA Board solicit and evaluate bids for NAN 2011, with the following conditions: The Committee recommends that in addition to the usual NAN bid specifications, the 2011 bid process require the bidders to commit at least one volunteer to be the NAN Chair or local coordinator. A local coordinator would be committed to on-going communication with the NAN Chair, the host venue, hotels, and other providers. The Board may also require a local coordinator to solicit, choose, and assign volunteers (ring stewards, announcer etc.).

The Steering Committee also strongly recommends that the Board specify a maximum expenditure for the hall plus table and chair rental. The specific value for the maximum expenditure should be based on analysis of needs and past costs. For example, approximately $12,400 was spent on show hall plus table/chair rental in Portland in 2009, and approximately $10,700 was spent for the same in Lexington in 2008. Both the Portland and Heritage Hall (Lexington) facilities provide more square footage than is required for a non-Kentucky NAN. Thus, we strongly recommend that the Board cap the hall/table/chair expenditure at a set value between these amounts, and stress the importance of matching the size of the show hall and price to the needed size for a non-Kentucky NAN.

Although NAN 2011 is likely to lose money, the Committee members in favor of accepting bids for 2011 felt that NAMHSA was in a financial position to absorb that loss, provided the Committee and Board commit to identify and implement changes to strengthen the financial bottom line of all future NANs. It was also noted that despite past NAN losses, NAMHSA has remained relatively stable financially over the past five years due to other sources of revenue such as the NAN Auction.

It is important to note that a minority of Committee members felt that the best action for the organization was to not offer NAN 2011, but rather commit its time and energy to the financial and logistical restructuring needed to make NAN a more enjoyable and financially viable show. These members felt that these gains outweighed hobbyist disappointment from skipping a NAN year. In addition, it was noted that it is poor business practice to commit to an event that continues to lose money.

The recommendation of the NAN Steering Committee is that bids for NAN 2011 should be solicited with increased requirements in place. If the Board is to take this route, the bid solicitation must go out as soon as possible, to allow sufficient time for bids to be researched and for the Board to discuss and vote on a location and dates. We recommend a deadline for bid submission no later than April 1 for the Board to have sufficient time to reserve a location at least one year before the event itself.

Respectfully submitted,
NAN Steering Committee

REGIONAL REPORTS

Region 1- Tracy Eilers
December had one show, "Two in One Live Show: Appaloosa Country FUNdraiser and TVMHC Annual Christmas Show" held by Sarah Tregay in Boise. We are looking forward to the "Ring in the New Year" show coming up on January 23rd up in Washington.
We are all ready for the weather to clear up, and the spring shows to start!

Region 2- Tom Dean
December saw 1 show, ORCO - OF Realistic Collectibility Only, held on December 12th in Sunnyvale. Thanks to Karen Harper for organizing this show, which included, far too much food, and an "Ornament Exchange", in addition to some fierce competion on the show tables.
Next up is New Years Bash Model Horse Show in Ridgecrest, California on January 23-24. This is a new addition to the region's shows hosted by Trisha Cavalliere.

Region 3- Teresa Buzzell
December is usually a quiet month for Region 3 with many of us under a lot of snow, trying to travel and the rest of us otherwise just plain occupied with the holidays. While those of us buried in snow tried to unbury ourselves, one show was held in Arizona - Walkin' in a Mini Winter Wonderland on December 5 in Tucson held in showholder Debra Roff's house. I was unable to attend but from the chatter on the local list, there was Secret Santa gifts, lots of food and some great classes.
Upcoming events:
January:
January 16, 2010: OSC: Draft and Pony Classic in Tucson, AZ. Please see the NAMHSA website for contact information.
Otherwise, we have nothing really upcoming other staying warm, dealing with snow and the usual winter blahs!

Region 4- Carra McClelland
NO REPORT

Region 5- Lori Batchelor
Well, not much to report for December. On the 5th, we had Mid-Kansas Live up in Andover, Kansas. This show has been held annually for at least 10 years and though the attendance was light, I am sure fun was had by all. Gay really knows how to have fun!
Then came the freezing temps and snow and ice, and we have all pretty much been stuck indoors. Where's that global warming? I'm ready!
Next month the region 5 show season kicks off with:
The 28 Days After Christmas show in OKC on January 22 (yes it's a Friday). The show will be for OF models only, but has a really extensive classlist. More info can be found in the files section of the Region 5 yahoo group list.
Then on January 23 & 24, Shannon Southard and Kim Wandrey are hosting the 2nd Annual Midwinter's Night Ball in the Ft Worth, Texas stockyards district. Last year the show was a real treat and I am sure this year it will be even bigger and better. I know it will be in a larger room, so we will be able to breathe! Both of these shows are NAN qualifiers.
On January 30, the Seminole,OK 4H group is having their 3rd annual model horse show. It is not a NAN qualifier, but there are always a lot of kids and a lot of fun to be had.

Region 6- Jackie Moore
Happy New Year Everyone!
There were no shows in Region 6 in December, and none scheduled for January. The next approved show on our calendar is Panhandle Live, on Feb 20. I know we won't get any sympathy from other regions, but it has been downright cold here in the Deep South! We're just not used to all this ice and freezing water pipes (and many of us moved here to get away from all that)! We are all looking forward to the spring show season and spring thaw! Stay Warm All!
******
Region 7- Heather Jackson-Lain
Other than a blanket of snow across much of region 7 there was nothing much to report. We are all hangin in there waiting for spring to bring back the shows.
******
Region 8- Marilou Mol
December was a fairly quiet month in region 8. There was only one show, the GLC No Frills series show in Huntley, Illinois, on December 4. I heard there was some killer competition there (as always!), and some wonderful performance setups to see!
On the same date, the Peter Stone Company held their annual Warehouse Sale in Shipshewana, Indiana. It sounds like people got some excellent models! It has been bitterly cold here in the midwest, so we are hoping for an early spring (even though it is 3 months away!).
******
Region 9- Pat Coulter
No shows to report for December! The first of the 2010 shows are just around the corner!
******
Region 10- Valerie Parker
Nothing to report for December. The 2010 show season is being planned and there is one show in January, Windrush Winter Warmup in Beverly, Massachusetts.
******
Region 11- Sandra Gibson
December was another quiet month for us in Canada. Apart from a weather station in Siberia my home city was the coldest place on earth! And now our weather extreme is heading the other way and we're way above freezing, it has been very weird.
Many showers out west are preparing for Winter Blahs live this coming January, its always a nice break from the cold-dark of winter. Otherwise Canada in the winter tends to be pretty quiet. Talks are beginning with regards to shows out east but as of yet nothing is concrete.
In December we had another loss in our group, Carol Zaretski who was an up and coming hobbyist from Lethbridge passed away. There are a few artists she had been in contact with & anyone needing to get in touch with her husband with regards to payment (as he does plan on paying everyone involved with her as there were a few) should contact Bobbie Mossiman at: corgi@telusplanet.net for contact information for Carol's husband. Please realise this was very unexpected, Carol was quite young and this is quite a tragic loss. And that's it from quiet Canada.
