NAMHSA - June 1-30, 2015 News

NAMHSA News for the period of June 1-30, 2015 based on the minutes compiled by Jackie Arns-Rossi, Recording Secretary.

Jun 1
-- Discussion continued about the final classlist for NAN. The question of splitting classes of 50 horses was brought up. A post by Niki Hertzog (R9) about the economics of classes at NAN was forwarded by Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS).

-- Carmen Robertson (treas) posted the April 2015 treasurer report:
Balance in BOA checking as of 4/30/2015: 58,260.23
Balance in PayPal as of 4/30/2015: 3,705.35
Balance in NAMHSA accounts as of 4/30/2015: 61,965.58

Jun 3
-- A poll was started to accept the final version of the NAN 2015 classlist.

-- An issue with the wording on the new membership proposal was brought up. The original ballot was slated to go out prior to May 30, but a series of events delayed this. The membership wording that was originally voted on would have gone into effect on May 30, after the voting period ended. Eleanor Harvey (parl) was asked for advice.

Jun 5
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) reported she was holding the ballot until the issue with the start dates of the proposed membership program changes was figured out. She also advised that the next few weeks were very busy on her end and her time for NAMHSA projects would be limited.

-- Eleanor Harvey (parl) confirmed that the BOD would need to approve a new start date for the membership program. There was no need to motion/second/discuss, just a vote could be done.

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) posted an update on recruiting judges for NAN 2015 and warned that she currently did not have enough judges to cover three judges per class for all divisions. She made a motion to allow one judge per class in the divisions that she didn’t have enough for three judges per class.

Niki Hertzog (R9) seconded.

Lynn Weber (R5 and web), Sharon Mossy (R10) Teresa Buzzell (pres) felt it was OK to go with single judging in the classes Jackie stated.

Jun 6
-- Kathy William (R2) requested one final call to members for judges.

Jun 7

-- Pauline Entin (R3) uploaded the membership proposal changes with a start date of July 1. Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) moved to accept and Lynn Weber (R5 and web) seconded. The vote was set to start the next day, with a 72 hour window to vote.

-- Pauline Entin (R3) and Jackie Moore (R6) also requested one more final request for judges for the 2015 NAN. Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) replied and reminded everyone that the show was only about three weeks away and the deadline needed to be mid-week in order to give her enough time to work on evaluating any new judge resumes.

Eleanor Harvey (parl) reminded the BOD that time was growing short and travel costs were going to be prohibitive for those out of region. She asked Kathy Williams (R2) to come up with names of people who were local. Kathy responded that she would look, but the call should not just be local.

Jun 8
-- A poll was started to approve the membership proposal changes with a start date of July 1.

Jun 11
-- Sharon Mossy (R10) posted a question about finding a new treasurer in Region 10. She was advised that this isn’t a NAMHSA issue, but a local one, as Region 10 has opted to create their own local central treasury for its regional championship show.

-- Teresa Buzzell (president) advised the BOD to consider single judging some classes at the 2015 NAN as there had been issues in getting adequate staff to cover all divisions. She cited that this was an annual problem for NAN, although the issues appeared particularly accentuated this year. Kathy Williams (R2), Pauline Entin (R3), Jackie Moore (R6), Annette Dean (R7), and Sharon Mossy (R10) all felt that this change should not be considered without considerable discussion from members and were not in favor of changing the three judge system. Teresa reminded the board that these issues have been ongoing and in need of change for years, and felt that stagnation would be the death of the organization.

Jun 12
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted a topic about some concerns about how NAN 2015 was being run so far and attached a timeline of conversations and attempted contacts. There was limited discussion as most participating in the discussion did not feel there was much to be done at this point.

Jun 15
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) advised the spring ballot was out.

-- Jackie Moore (R6) suggested running NAN every other year as opposed to annually in response to the discussion on concerns about NAN 2015. Annette Dean (R7) and Sharon Mossy (R10) agreed. Annette suggested looking at other venues in the Lexington area. Annette also suggested sending one of the former NAN chairs to Palm Springs to oversee the event. This idea was scrapped as it felt that this would be an unwelcome intrusion and none of the available chairs could go.

-- Niki Hertzog (R9) revealed that the Stones had overordered the trophies by 70, resulting in an extra $1400 in costs. This increase was made by the Stones directly with Aulds and not discussed with the NAN committee or BOD beforehand.

Jun 16
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) advised she had been contacted by a hobbyist about photos from the first NAN that she wanted to donate to the organization. Lynn Weber (R5 and web) advised she would handle them.

-- Niki Hertzog (R9) advised that she had, effective immediately, resigned from the NAN committee.

-- Stacy Quick (R1) asked if there was any way to recycle NAN rosettes as she had a member contact her to ask. Janna Shepherd (PR) advised she also had a request for where to donate old rosettes. Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked that these be brought to NAN.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted an update on issues with NAN 2015.

-- Niki Hertzog (R9) also offered some insight onto the extra trophy order.

Jun 17
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) requested that an announcement be made about the election as turnout was poor.

Jun 21
-- Lindsay Diamond (R4 and SMS) asked about the protocol for postponing a show. The show could be postponed a year without any additional action on the show holder.

Jun 23
-- Janna Shepherd (PR) alerted the BOD that there was a post on NAMHSADiscussion from a hobbyist complaining that she did not get a ballot. Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) advised she was aware of the situation and had been in contact with the hobbyist, but the hobbyist did not have any way to prove she was a current member. Jackie posted the entire email exchange between the hobbyist and herself. Jackie also gave a list of recommended changes for future elections including making the membership list public (regions, names, and expiration dates only) and guidelines for voting deadlines based on members being able to take responsibility for knowing the status of their own membership.

Lynn Weber (R5 and web) suggested adding the IM secretary to the PayPal account so she would get receipts for memberships. Jackie felt this would work if the memberships could be teased out from other payments. Danielle Miller (IMS) and Teresa Buzzell (pres) both agreed on using separate transactions.

-- Sandra Gibson (R11) asked about a shower in her area who failed to pay $120 in entry fees to a NAN qualifier show. This shower wanted to enter a show Sandra was holding. Sandra reported she advised this person she had to pay in cash to enter, but asked if she was required to let this person enter since they still owed the other show holder money. She also asked about invalidating this person’s cards from the show that the shower hadn’t paid the fees for.

Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised that yes, if the shower paid in cash, she had to be allowed to show. NAMHSA could not revoke the NAN cards. Sandra later reported that the shower squared up with the hostess for the previous show.

Jun 24
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) advised that she had a judge cancel on NAN for this weekend. She advised that she would try to rework the schedule for Saturday as best she could but the board should be prepared for the possibility of having some classes single judged as the Saturday judging schedule was already very tight. She also recommend announcing what classes might be affected ahead of time and offering refunds for people who did not want to show without a three judge panel. She later reported that she was able to fill all the affected classes with 3 judges each, but that the schedule could not tolerate any more changes.

Jun 25
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) posted the results of the spring election: NAMHSA 2015 Spring election:

New Reps:
R1: Stacy Quick
R3: Yashka Hallein
R5: Lynn Weber
R7: Carol Tuft
R9: Barbara DiAnnibella
R11: Lisa Sharpe

Vice President Election:
Kim Bjorgo-Thorne will serve as VP 2015-2016, and President 2016-2017.

Membership Changes:
Approve 158
Do Not Approve 19

Membership changes go into effect July 1.

Jun 26
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised the BOD that she had to call Jim West (NAN registrar) to advise that a NAN entrant had paid for her entry fee with a check that bounced (this was after paying with a money order made out to the incorrect party). She advised Jim to have the shower leave to get cash funds for her entry; any awards won previously in the day would be null and void; any classes missed while getting cash funds for the entry fee would be missed/entries cancelled; and if she was unable to provide cash funds for her entry fee, she would be escorted out of the show hall.

Teresa later reported that the entrant had paid in cash. Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) asked what the policy was for handling fees incurred due to bounced checks. Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) suggested adding a policy to cover this.

Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) advised she was sending out congratulations messages to new board members.

Jun 27
-- Niki Hertzog (R9) suggested adding a policy stating that NAN entry would not be processed until payment had been received as there had been a number of issues with entry fees this year.

Jun 28
-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) started working on website changes with the new membership rules in effect.

-- Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) advised that Lynn Weber’s term as web manager was coming to an end and a new web design person would be needed.

Jun 29
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted an application for the fundraising position and there was some discussion about the applicant.

-- Jenna Murphy (R8) advised she had received an email from a member outlining concerns over potential changes for NAN.

-- Lindsay Diamond (R4 and SMS) posted an email she had received from past NAN chair, Carra McClelland concerning the future and viability of NAN.

This sparked some discussion on the matter of the monetary costs and available volunteer pool and the effect on the sustainability of NAN. Several reps reported that they had been sent emails and text messages in support of the three judge system. Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked that discussion on this topic be held until after NAN wrap up had finished.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) requested recaps from the board about the 2015 NAN.

-- Jackie Moore (R6) enquired on the status of a plaque from the 2014 NAN for a volunteer who hadn’t received one. Carmen Robertson (treas) advised she was only aware of Sharon Mossy’s (R10) missing championship plaque and there were no more volunteer plaques. Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised that too much time had gone by to order another plaque.

Jun 30
-- Jenna Murphy (R8) offered to consider serving as fundraising chair. Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised Jenna not to overcommit herself.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted the agenda for July:
1. NAN recap/debrief
2. Getting our new reps on and up to speed (more of a to do item)
3. Further exploration of one judge including Stacy/Carra's proposal

-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) advised that she needed email addresses and passwords for new reps to get them on the forum and get the regional email forwarding to them.

-- Jenna Murphy (R8) offered to publish books that would serve as fundraisers for NAMHSA. Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) cautioned to make sure these books were not seen in any way as rule books for judging classes at NAN. Jackie cited past incidents of things that had been tangentially associated with NAN or NAMHSA that went awry, with NAMHSA taking blame for situations not in their control. Teresa Buzzell (pres) suggested writing the books first and then presenting them to BOD as possible judging guides.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) forwarded a refund request from a NAN entrant who was unable to attend due to a family emergency. The cancellation/refund policy from the Show Packet was referenced and it was decided that a 50% refund was appropriate.

-- Sandra Gibson (R11) posted a Facebook post from the author of the NAN 2015 Palm Springs bid.

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) also posted her take on NAN 2015 including the experiences she had working with the NAN Chairs, hiring and managing the judges, and some of the complaints and problems that arose.

Dayle Steinke (MAC), Kathy Williams (R2), Sandra Gibson (R11), and Stacy Quick (R1) all posted reports based on their experience while attending NAN 2015. All shared what they felt worked well, and things that did not. There was discussion about the judges and judging; several incidents that took place at the show and with the venue; and how well the NAN chairs and other volunteers fulfilled their duties or didn’t. Discussion ensued.

Recent Shows:

Preakness Saturday where we got to see American Pharoah go 2 for 2 was also Sharon and Phil Massouris’ First Show Of The New Season (FSOTNS). Sharon and Phil hosted the all mini show in their home in Anaheim, CA. It was this show’s 6th year and we had an amazing time as always. This is the type of show that got us all hooked on model shows in the early days the kind that grew our hobby – an athome gathering where everyone has fun and is treated like family. FSOTNS is something to look forward to every year when it is always held on Preakness Saturday. Thanks Sharon & Phil!

Region 10 June Report
We've had some wonderful shows happen over the last few weeks! Manchester Model Madness, held by Jennifer Bolton, was a HUGE success and extremely well attended it was a sold out show! I highly look forward to this show again next year.

Then, on May 30th and 31st, THREE shows were held and all had quite a few entrants! Marisa Evan's show, Factory Ponies Live, was a big hit, as usual. Nancy Timm's show and Marci Driscoll's show were just as amazing and well attended. This is just one heck of a model horse filled weekend!

And on June 6th, Amanda Reed held a Novice show and it was VERY well attended it was amazing to hear about how many new showers attended and enjoyed themselves!

I wanted to just thank ALL of these show hostesses and the people that make all these shows possible. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for all of the work that you guys do.

As far as upcoming shows, on August 15-16th, in Boxborough MA, Maria Firstenberg is hosting Baystate Models Live. This show is a wonderful show at a wonderful venue and I can't recommend it enough get your entries in!!
