NAMHSA - December 1-31, 2014 News

NAMHSA News for the period of December 1-31, 2014 based on the minutes compiled by Jackie Arns, Recording Secretary.

Dec 1
-- Stacy Quick (R1) posted a list of email addresses for showers still owed NAN trophies, along with a draft email she intended to send to these showers to collect addresses on where to send one.

Dec 2
-- Carmen Robertson (treas) posted the October Treasurer Summary Report:
October 2014 Treasurer Report Summary
Balance in BOA checking as of 10/31/2014: 65,604.14
Balance in PayPal as of 10/31/2014: 134.74
Balance in NAMHSA accounts as of 10/31/2014: 65,738.88

-- Carmen Robertson (treas) reported that the bounced check she had noted last month had been made good on by the check writer. She also asked if there was an update on anyone owed NAN trophies.

Dec 3
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) reminded the BOD about a discussion on limiting members to one vote per person, specifically citing a recommendation by Danielle Miller (IMS). Jackie Moore (R6) felt it was worth exploring. Lynn Weber (R5 and web) asked if costs needed to be hammered out prior to a vote.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) requested that Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) start a poll to select the new Show Secretary.

Dec 4
-- Eleanor Harvey (parl) posted segments from the bylaws on how a new VP should be chosen when the president steps down. The BOD had been planning on a special election for a new VP.

-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) posted a message requesting an update on the OF China issue at NAN.

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) started the following poll:
Please select a candidate for the new Show Secretary:
- Lindsay Diamond
- Lee Ann Bachman
- Abstain

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) posted the November 16-30 minutes for approval. These were approved by Teresa Buzzell (pres) the following day.

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) advised she was still reviewing email from the NAN Chair inbox.

Dec 5
-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) suggested adding “test” as an option for China showers entering NAN. Discussion continued about the issue.

Dec 6
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted the December agenda:
Currently working on:
-NAN 2014 Recap, esp. China Issue
-1 Person/1 Vote
Currently stalled:
-Database (need costs before we can vote on it - motion tabled pending that information)
-Code of Conduct - New stuff that I hope to work on this month and not start next month!
-NAN 2015
- Discuss the possibility of searching out a different KY location
-Kick around the idea of going from 3 judges to 1 judge. Pros, cons, cost analysis, etc.
-NAN Packet changes part 1 - deadline for refunds, explanation paragraph regarding Decos vs Fantasy
-NAN Program changes part 1 - programming changes for registration that Eleanor had recommended.

-- Annette Dean (R7) offered to help seek an alternate venue for the KY NAN.

Dec 7
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised that she was willing to serve out Tom Dean’s term as president as well as her own. She also suggested holding the VP election early and have that person sit on the BOD from March onward (instead of from May) as a way to combat transition issues.

Dec 8
-- Jackie Moore (R6) reported she was still waiting to hear back from those involved with the china judging experiences at NAN.

Dec 9
-- Pauline Entin (R3) asked if potential NAN chairs during the bidding process had applied for NAN chair. Teresa Buzzell (pres) had been in contact with some applicants, but so far no formal application had been made. Teresa advised she would remind them that this step was needed.

-- Carmen Robertson (treas) reported that in the case of a minor trying to serve in an appointed post that may require handling money, the minor could report to an adult who would be responsible for her.

-- Discussion began regarding the current membership structure.

Dec 10
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted the resume of the only candidate that applied for 2015 registrar, Jim West. BOD members were enthusiastic about having Jim at NAN again.

-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) posted a statement from a steward about some of the china classes that had issues at NAN.

-- Niki Hertzog (R9) advised the BOD that in Region 9 there were younger showers who seemed to be confused about the definition of an Original Finish model and that the rumor that modifications to finish (such as added markings) were still considered OF so long as those modifications were less than 10% of the entire model.

Dec 11
-- On December 11th, the poll for the new Show Secretary closed. The new Show Secretary is Lindsay Diamond, effective January 1st, 2015.
-Voted:
Stacy Quick (R1)
Kathy Williams (R2)
Pauline Entin (R3)
Lynn Weber (R5)
Jackie Moore(R6)
Annette Dean (R7)
Niki Hertzog (R9)
Sharon Mossy (R10)
Sandra Gibson (R11)
-Did not vote:
Jenna Murphy (R8)
-Abstain:
Lindsay Diamond (R4)

-- Jackie Moore (R6) advised that she was still waiting on an email about the China test issue but that the report was similar to an experience a friend of Jackie’s had at NAN this year. Jackie later posted a statement.

-- Discussion continued about proposed changes to the membership structure.

Dec 12
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) reviewed the information from the NAN OF china classes and surmised that the Chair had made a wrong judgement call at the show. She felt the correct course was to acknowledge what happened and refund entry fees of affected horses.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted the resume of the sole applicants for NAN chair, Donna and Harvey Stone.

Dec 13
-- Annette Dean (R7) suggested that a FAQ or person on the ground be present at the 2015 NAN to answer questions should issues arise as they did in the china division. Niki Hertzog (R9), Teresa Buzzell (pres) and Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) offered to serve in an advisory capacity, though none would be available in person at NAN.

Dec 14
-- Carmen Robertson (treas) posted the November Treasurer report:
Balance in BOA checking as of 11/30/2014: 65,604.40
Balance in PayPal as of 11/30/2014: 128.88
Balance in NAMHSA accounts as of 11/30/2014: 65,734.02

-- There was some discussion about how to handle china test horses at NAN in the future. While some models were obviously tests, there were concerns about small production hobby companies producing one of a kind horses and marking them as tests when they may be more appropriate in the custom glaze division.

-- Amy Peck (SMS) also offered her take on the proposed membership changes.

-- Lindsay Diamond (R4) requested the current costs for printing cards.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) requested a summary of what needed to be done as far as electing a new Vice President or what bylaw changes were needed to help streamline succession.

Dec 16
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) moved to accept Jim West as the 2015 NAN Registrar. Lynn Weber (R5 and web) seconded the motion, and Eleanor Harvey (parl) called for discussion pending a call for a vote from Teresa Buzzell (pres).

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) advised that currently a time frame for officer elections was outlined in the bylaws and moving them to an earlier time from would require a bylaws change. She also suggested putting out a call for candidates immediately if the plan was to have a new officer in place by March.

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) posted the December 1-15 mintues. These were approved by Teresa Buzzell (pres) on December 18.

-- Eleanor Harvey (parl) summarized the current procedure for succession should a sitting president vacate their office prematurely:
As the bylaws are written, Teresa recommends a willing candidate for interim VP to the board, and the board votes whether to approve. Then in March when we put out the scheduled call for a VP and the appropriate regional reps, life goes back to normal. So the interim VP only serves out the remainder of Teresa's term, and then goes away--he or she does NOT automatically become the next President. Teresa remains President, and the newly elected VP becomes the next VP.

Dec 17
-- Discussion regarding NAN 2015 Chair applicants continued.

-- Annette Dean (R7) forwarded an email from a hobbyist regarding NAN 2014 judging issues. Jackie Moore (R6) pointed out that one judge should not have been judging any classes in the division they were proxy showing in, not just classes they had entered. Jackie also suggested color coding judge’s badges.

Dec 18
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked Lynn Weber (R5 and web) to get a list from Jim West of horses that the judge at NAN had shown so it could be cross referenced with classes they may have judged.

-- Niki Hertzog (R9) offered some suggestions for the work load for 2015 NAN.

-- Jackie Moore (R6) asked what the next step was to resolving the issue with incorrectly disqualified OF horses in the china division at NAN 2014. Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked Jackie to write a statement about the findings and request owners of affected models to contact NAMHSA for a refund of entry fees for those horses.

-- Stacy Quick (R1) updated a list of volunteer owed shirts and/or plaques and people who had purchased wine glasses who did not receive them.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised that she had an interim VP in mind. Eleanor Harvey (parl) advised that the BOD needed to consider this appointment and put it to a vote.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) called for a vote to appoint Jim West the Registrar for the 2015 NAN. Jackie Arns-Rossi set up the following poll: Should the Board appoint Jim West as Registrar for the 2015 NAN?
- yes
- no
- abstain

-- Amy Peck (SMS) posted current pricing for NAN card printing and shipping.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked Lindsay Diamond (R4) to check out pricing with local printers. Lindsay agreed to do so.

Dec 19
-- Pauline Entin (R3) felt that in cases where a NAN judge worked classes in a division in which they were entered that all of that judge’s horses for the division in question should be disqualified. Niki Hertzog (R9) agreed and felt all the judge’s horses in that division should be stripped of awards.

-- Annette Dean (R7) asked if anyone had contacted Jim West about the issue of the judge having judged classes in which her horses were entered.

Dec 20
-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) posted an update on the situation with a judge who judged and showed in the same division at NAN. Teresa Buzzell (pres) implied that the 6 horses earning Top Tens in the OFP division would be disqualified.

Dec 21
-- Annette Dean (R7) reported that the potentials NAN Chairs were seeking a timeline for NAN. Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) said Eleanor Harvey (parl) had a timeline and she would alert Eleanor. Annette Dean (R7) advised she had asked them for a ribbon count, as ribbons had been sent directly to them by Jim West after the 2014 NAN and no count was recorded.

-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) forwarded an email from a concerned hobbyist about a situation with a former NAMHSA representative. Lynn posted her reply and let her know that NAMHSA would not be able to help her.

Dec 22
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) reposted a link containing documents she had used to manage the 2010 NAN.

-- Eleanor Harvey (parl) posted her timeline for NAN 2015.

-- Niki Hertzog (R9) advised that in regards to the proxy showing problem, the full top ten could be restored for the classes in the OFP division where horses would be disqualified based on point calculations from judge’s cards. She offered to do this task as well.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked for any further discussion on changing the membership program.

-- Sandra Gibson (R11) reported that there was a thread on Model Horse Blab requesting NAMHSA to respond with sanctions regarding the current incident with the former representative. All responding to this felt that the situation was well beyond NAMHSA’s scope of duties.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked if there were any more comments on changes to the membership program. Discussion continued.

Dec 23
-- Stacy Quick (R1) reported that a person she contacted advised she was still owed a pair of wine glasses that had been paid for prior to NAN.

Dec 26
-- The following poll closed:
Should the Board appoint Jim West as Registrar for the 2015 NAN?
- yes
Stacy Quick (R1)
Kathy WIlliams (R2)
Pauline Entin (R3)
Lindsay Diamond (R4)
Lynn Weber (R5)
Jackie Moore (R6)
Annette Dean (R7)
Niki Hertzog (R9)
Sharon Mossy (R10)
Sandra Gibson (R11)
- no
- abstain
Note that Jenna Murphy (R8) did not vote.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised she would contact the judge who judged and showed in the same division she was judging about removing her horses from their placings in the OF plastic division that she erroneously judged.

Dec 27
-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted an entrant list from the 2014 NAN.

Dec 28
-- Amy Peck (SMS) advised that she had received a show application for a show date of 2/4/2015. The application had been received on 12/27/2014 with no clear postmark. The application was also postage due. The show holder had sent the show fee in cash as well. Amy asked the BOD to look into this, as she felt that this show had been sent with less than 60 days before the show date, and that burden of proof to show that the application had been sent 60 days prior rested with the show holder.

Dec 29
-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) reported that a member from her region asked for clarification on using the name of a real horse in their documentation and if this would run afoul of current NAN requirements for leaving the names of models and artists off documentation. It was determined that the name of a real horse could be used in documentation.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) agreed with Amy Peck (SM) that the show holder needed to prove her application had been sent 60 days prior to the show date and asked how often Amy had gotten cash in the mail for show fees. Amy replied this was the third incident in three years, and those prior time had also been from the same show holder.

-- Lindsay Diamond (R4) advised that she was exploring the system that was set up for managing qualifiers. She asked that the SMS be issued a pre-paid Visa card for expenses. Amy Peck (SMS) noted that the Show Secretary position was allowed petty cash per current policy.

-- Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked for final thoughts on changes to the membership program.

Dec 30
-- Kathy Williams (R2) felt that the show holder's show should be accepted despite no proof that the show application and fees had been sent within the deadline. Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised Amy Peck (SMS) to tell her to not send cash in the future, and also asked that she be advised that her application had been sent postage due and proof of when it was sent was needed in order to approve the show on its original date.

-- Amy Peck (SMS) posted the newest approved shows:

Hello and happy 2015!

Winter did not stop the showing season down in the Southern part of the region. We had Walkin In A (Mostly) Mini Wonderland down in Tucson on December 7. This show was followed by another event for smaller models, Blue Christmas Live in Phoenix, on December 14. I was not able to attend the show in Tucson, but Evelyn Spitzer has supplied a great show report: "Debi Roff hosted a most wonderful festive Wonderland Mini Show in Tucson, AZ yesterday. We had a most relaxing time and the show moved right along at a steady pace that wasn't too fast. Debi had Christmas Gifts for each entrant and I went home with beautiful holiday potholders for my kitchen..... how did Santa Debi know I really needed some of those!...Debi made the cutest most festive Champion and Reserve Champion mini ribbons with holiday colors... Also, the division champions were given beautiful handpainted southwestern theme pottery pieces." This show also featured a Jaci Hibbert Memorial Etching Class. This class is a memorial to a Tucson-area hobbyist who passed away several years ago.
I did attend Blue Christmas Live, which was an all-china show for classics and minis held by Renee DeVore at her lovely home in Phoenix. I think it's safe to say all entrants had a great time. We were fortunate to have Kathy Williams come and guest judge OF china. Renee provided a great home cooked lunch and Jolene Kortan brought the most scrumptious golden grahams s'mores. The festivities ended with a fun ornament exchange. Next up in Region 3 is TES New Year Celebration 2015 to be held by Rachel Mitchell in Tucson on January 24, 2015.

Best wishes for a great 2015 to all.

November held several excellent shows. Congrats to everyone who showed.

December is a quiet month with no shows, but things will start to pick up again in January. The Bristol Blazers 4-H club has added an open division to their show! Be sure to check it out on January 24, 2015.

I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and a happy New Year as well! Some fun stuff coming up for 2015, including what looks to be a fun NAN in Palm Springs!

November brought us Mid Ark Model Horse Expo in Greenbrier, AR held by Tracy Rogalla, and the following weekend we had a two day show, Silver Spur Live on the Bayou in Sulphur, LA held by Charlotte D. Martin and Renee Jordan. Mid Kansas All Performance show finished out the month for us.

December is a no show month, but showers in both Kansas and Texas will be getting together for food, fun and friendship.

Region 5's only NAN Qualifying show so far for the new year is A Midwinter's Night Ball in Georgetown, TX. It appears there will be showers from at least four of the five states in our region there. It's expected to be a very large show, if past numbers are any indication. I hope to see you there!

Hopefully by the next report we will have a few more shows added to the show calendar!

Hello All!

There were two shows in Region 6 in November.

Palmetto State Live was held November 8 in Irmo, SC. This was a fantastic show and I am so glad I was able to make the drive up. Kudos to show hostess Lisa Garcia for continuing to host this series of shows in South Carolina. Put this show on your to-do list!

Rockin' Redneck Roundup Live was held November 29 in Kissimmee, FL. This was another super fun show and I had a total blast! Show hostess Lori Daniels does not disappoint. Great food for lunch, "Roadkill" dessert, and, of course, the coveted Moon Pie rosettes for champs and reserves (and mini Moon Pies for the Mini divisions!). The redneck photo booth with the mother 'possom and beer cans was the icing on the cake!

The next show on the Region 6 calendar is the Hollow Horse Holiday Show and Social in Cumming, GA on Dec 6, followed by All The Pretty Ponies in Newberry, FL on Jan 31.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a safe Black Friday, and I wish you all a very happy holiday season.

See you at the shows!

We had two shows in our region in November - both on the same weekend:

Clinky Classic 5 was a fired-ceramics specialty show, held November 1st and 2nd, 2014. This East Tennessee show attracted participants from six NAMHSA Regions, fourteen states. The judges came from four different Regions, a broad sample of opinion for a specialty show. This year, the show awarded 12 trad-size ceramic trophies, dozens of medallions, and many donated ceramic prizes as bonus or surprise class sponsorships. The Lakeshore Collection sponsored its own division. This show does not hold an auction nor raffle with donations; instead, donations are awarded directly back to the entries. Without those means of fundraising, the show supports itself with a satin ribbon recycling program, entry fees (which have been frozen for two years), and Marge Para's and Kristina's donations of ceramic medallions and trophies.
Additionally, the participants in the show often bring treats or gifts to share with fellow exhibitors. For instance, Lois Bennington brought adorable pony cups, filled with treats, for all the show participants! The atmosphere at the show is very laid-back and friendly, and the spirit of sharing and learning is abundant. In the show hall's large kitchen, show staff husbands are in charge of catering delivery, serving food, and clean-up, so the show stays on schedule with lunchbreaks. Breakfast food and beverages are provided free, from hall opening until closing, each day. The show added a large new division this year, splitting out the two main finish techniques of Custom Glazes into Overglaze and Underglaze, in both Breed and Workmanship. This allowed like to compete with like, to a degree never before offered at any show. The show's usual Small Production division was modified to exclude OF china tests, as there was no NAMHSA decision on the NAN rule/entry for qualified test models by show date. The tests that came to the show just to share (and for photo ops) were offered a non-qualifying challenge class with new, large medallion awards. The results documentation was submitted to Amy in November, and the photo results for CC5 are here: https://www.facebook.com/ClinkyClassic

Also on November 1st was Tri State Live in Maumee, OH, a Traditional Size show hosted by Dee Majors with divisions for Performance, Stone, Breyer, Custom, AR, and China. The show was well attended and had lots of eye candy for us to see. There was some great competition and we all had a great time.

We look forward to future shows there this coming year.
