Kathy McKenzie's love of equines began as a child. This passion continued into adulthood. After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Fine Art, she combined her artistic talents with her love of horses as she began to customize and paint models. Kathy initially painted in oils, but later switched to airbrushing techniques with the added use of hand painted acrylics, pastels, and colored pencils.

Kathy's artistic talent was extraordinary. She strived to make each piece come to life and had superb attention to detail. Her artistic style included the use of rich colors and beautiful shading, with an incredibly smooth finish. Kathy's highly sought after works of art have graced numerous show tables, garnering NAN top tens and championships. Her pieces have added to the rich history of the model horse hobby.

As a competitor at shows, Kathy truly appreciated and was inspired by the talents of her fellow artists. She enjoyed watching the enthusiasm of young competitors and seeing growth in the hobby. Kathy was also a person who believed in giving back to her community. She often donated her works to support various model horse shows. She was a kind person who also donated her time to Pets for Life, a pet-assisted therapy organization. Our community mourns the loss of such a wonderful person and talented artist.

This star dapple gray Make A Wish was done in Kathy's signature style, one we will all miss.
